As far as holding power, I can't imagine these things will ever give way. I had enought time just removing one staple that only went half way in from hitting a nail. That sucker's not going anywhere. I think the manufacturer of the floor you chose will have specifications as to how many nails or staples should be applied per linear foot, and then add it up from there.
This is a debate that will probably never end. But if given the choice I would rather tear out a cleated floor than a stapled down any day of the week. I personally prefer nails cleats and I do know that installers and manufacturers all have their preferences. An over-driven staple is just as likely to fracture a tongue as a nail is.
