The character is depicted far less threatening than in the original series, and while Marqus Bobesich captures that in his delivery, the take on the character just didn't ever come together for me, especially when the character shares scenes with Jason Marnocha's Megatron. I get wanting a different tone and style, as seen when you compare Primal to Prime, but Primal still comes off as a leader and a badass, and Predacon Megatron simply does not. While the Maximals are all delightful especially Rhinox and Rattrap , it's actually a Predacon that holds the most impact.
While Optimus Prime and Optimus Primal are the core elements of this chapter, it's actually Dinobot, voiced by Krizz Kaliko, who is the chapter's soul. Kaliko is outstanding in the role, bringing a sense of grounding and believability to his character's conflicted nature, and if you aren't a fan of the character as of yet, prepare for that to change. As for the narrative holding this all together, there's quite a bit going on here, but Kingdom manages to keep all the various points from overwhelming each other while throwing in a few gut punches that invested viewers will absolutely feel.
It does get a little heady at times, and there are slow points, but more often than not the pace picks up before a particular story point can overstay its welcome. The Autobots are seen as the saviours of Cybertron, while the Decepticons want to rule it with an iron fist. Optimus Prime and Megatron stand out in this regard, as players experience their differing leadership styles.
Their introductions to the story add whole new layers to the conflict, which touch on the ethics of war and the experimentation of soldiers. Pretty dark for a franchise made to sell toys, but very fitting in a story about the cyclical nature of war. When it comes to the gameplay of Fall of Cybertron, the mechanics in play suit the robots in disguise perfectly. Both Fall of Cybertron and its prequel are basically Gears of War clones, with the transformation gimmick opening up a whole lot of possibilities gameplay-wise.
Each Transformer can turn into an aircraft, automobile, or dinosaur anytime they want, giving a whole new sense of speed and verticality when it comes to third-person cover shooters. This time, the show does an excellent job showing more sides of grey with both the Autobots and Decepticons, as the Autobots were originally the elite while the Decepticons slaves forced to fight in gladiator pits. Characters have more nuance as well, with Bumble Bee a mercenary starting out. Matched by some great CGI animation, this makes for one of the better reboots in recent years. Johnathon W. Everyone involved is trying to do an impression of somebody that would've been happy to be involved in the show and I find it annoyingly glaring. The best chapter of the trilogy though. Ian M.
